Wildlife around Newtown

Newtown, straddling the River Severn and surrounded by the rolling hills of the Welsh Marches is, not surprisingly, rich in wildlife.

Nature reserves in Mid Wales
The Festival of the Countryside

A walk beside the river, particularly if early in the morning, can provide views of kingfishers, grey wagtails and dippers feeding along the quieter stretches, and even the elusive otter may be glimpsed by the lucky observer. During the summer months dragonflies and demoiselles glide over the river, and large numbers of swifts nest in the various churches and chapels. In winter, peregrines and sparrowhawks can often be seen hunting over the town, and up to 30 whooper swans regularly feed in fields between Newtown and Aberhafesp. The huge Black Poplar in the Gravel Car Park is an impressive sight at any time of the year. Many badgers live in the woods and hills overlooking the town, and trips out to a local sett can be arranged.

Pwll Penarth, a wetland nature reserve managed by the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust in partnership with Severn Trent Water, lies between a bend in the river and the derelict Montgomery Canal. The reserve is centred around a large lake with shallow margins ideal for waders, deeper water for ducks and a number of islands on which breeding birds can safely nest, and is overlooked by two hides. Birds regularly seen include goosander, lapwing and canada goose, and a colony of sand martins nest in lengths of cliff created especially for them. In autumn the adjacent weir on the River Severn can provide a wildlife spectacle as salmon try to jump it, or run up the fish pass built into the left bank.

Pwll Penarth is found at grid reference SO 137926, next to Newtown sewage works. Take the B4568 from Newtown to Llanllwchaiarn, turn down by the church and follow the lane for a mile to the sewage works gates. Park down the track in the area signposted. Alternatively, follow the Severn Way on foot for approximately 2 miles following the river down stream from the town.
