Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council
The Town Council was established in 1974, with 16 Members, who are elected every 4 years. The next elections will be in May 2012, although vacancies can filled by co-option prior to that date. The Town Council is the link between the public and the Unitary Authority, Powys County Council and is consulted on planning, highways and other issues which may affect the town. The Town Council also provides community input to the Welsh Assembly Government on issues at a National level, which very often affect local communities.
The Town Council Offices and Council Chamber are located above the Robert Owen Museum at the Cross. There are a variety of rooms available for hire, including the Council Chamber, at very reasonable rates.
The Town Council is responsible for a number of facilities in the town which include:
- The War Memorial and Gardens.
- The Robert Owen Memorial Gardens.
- St Mary's Church tower and grounds.
- Gardens at the Cambrian bridge.
- Childrens Play Areas at Maesyrhandir, Sycamore Drive, Northside Community Hall and the Town Park.
- Public amenity areas and open space at Blackhall, flower beds on Back Lane and seating and shrub area in the Town Park.
- Public seating amounting to around 70 public benches which can be identified by the Town Council plaque.
- Multisports area at Vaynor near to The Shuttle.
- The public reading room located within the Robert Owen Museum, which has a variety of daily and weekly newspapers.
- Maintenance of Brisco House and the Council Offices which includes the Robert Owen Museum and Reading Room.
The Council's major activity of the year is the erection and maintenance of the Christmas Lights in Newtown. The switching-on of the lights is usually on the last Friday in November and is attended by many thousands who gather in the town centre at 7pm to witness the arrival of Santa and the firework display.
The Council also provides grant funding to local community groups, applications for which are considered at the April and October meetings of the Council. Forms are available from the Council Offices or by telephoning 01686 625544.
Meetings of the Council are held on the last Monday of each month. Agenda are displayed on the notice board on Broad Street and agendas and minutes are available from the Library.
