The Arts in Newtown

Newtown is an Arts paradise in Mid Wales. We have two important features which should not be missed.

Dancers at the Powys Theatre

Oriel Davies Gallery is a Regional Art Gallery, located in the park. It hosts a wide variety of Art exhibitions by local artists and those renowned in their particular field. It is a valuable education resource for the schools and colleges in the area. It is also an enjoyable place to visit, even if you don't have a great interest in the Arts. But if you do, regular workshops are held covering all forms of visual art.

Theatr Hafren, at the western end of the town, is a theatre venue of regional and local significance. It hosts a wide variety of entertainment, ranging from local school productions to internationally recognised performers. Art exhibitions in the bar help to create the right atmosphere to enjoy your visit. Theatr Hafren lies next to Coleg Powys, with Themes Restaurant, where you can enjoy lunch or themed evening meals. Book early as these are regularly sold out. Mid Wales Opera holds a season at the theatre in August, and carries an enviable reputation.

The Powys Theatre

Powys Theatre

Powys Theatre is the home of amateur dramatics in Newtown. A regular programme of plays is held through the year. Again, productions are very popular so you need to reserve your ticket.

The Community Art Project brings a wide range of arts experience to the community. Not highbrow stuff but for those who want to have a go. See their work on the shop fronts in Market Street and at the multi sports area at Vaynor. There is much more than this, with a regular programme of events and workshops for people of all ages and ability.

Regent Cinema at the end of Longbridge is the venue for film goers in Newtown. Up to date films are shown and change weekly on Fridays.

There is a whole host of amateur music groups in Newtown. They cover the full range of music styles from classical to classic rock. Watch out for details of their performances in the local press and support your local talent.

The Gregynog Music Festival is held at the end of June, each year. Gregynog is the former home of the Davies Sisters who were great Art Collectors. The magnificent house was bequeathed to Aberystwyth University and now hosts an annual music festival. The accent is on classical music and attracts internationally renowned performers.

The house is also the home of the Gregynog Press, which produces limited editions and special commissions of books on various subjects. Everything is produced here, from the paper to the finished product.

Gregynog can be found 8 miles north of Newtown on the Llanfair Road. It is well worth a visit at any time. The gardens are open to the public and are at their best in the late spring.
